W. R. (Richard) Jorgenson passed away in Colorado Springs at the age of 94, on January 3, 2018.
Mr. Jorgenson was born on September 12, 1923 in Las Animas, Colorado to Ted and Martha (Purvis) Jorgenson. He grew up in the town of his birth and lived there for a large portion of his life, and his love for his home community ran deep.
In his youth, Richard attended the University of Georgia; he trained as a pilot and served in the Navy during World War II. He was aboard the USS Lexington during the Battle of the Coral Sea until the ship’s sinking on May 8, 1942.
Mr. Jorgenson was past president of the First National Bank of Las Animas, as well as the President of the Independent Banks of Colorado. He spent much of his time in civic service, serving as the President of the Las Animas Chamber of Commerce, which named him Man of the Year several times. He was a member of the Elks, the Shriners, and the Lions. An avid golfer, he was instrumental in bringing a golf course to Las Animas.
Richard was a quiet man, soft-spoken and gentle, always upbeat and optimistic, ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He loved his family and took care to make sure they were well and happy. He loved a good laugh, and always had a joke at the ready. Along with golfing, Richard spent many happy hours in his garden.
Mr. Jorgenson is survived by his wife, Lorna (Thomas) Jorgenson; his daughter, Joyce Maupin (Jerry); his son, Richard Jorgenson; his step-children, John Sobeck, David Sobeck and Kathy (Sobeck) Davis; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; and 9 great-step-grandchildren.
