Renee was born on August 7, 1964, the first daughter to Robert and Barbara Metzger. As the family grew, she became a big sister to Wendy and Hank, and later an aunt to Brianna and Aspyn. The Metzger three grew up close, and they grew up country–camping, fishing, raising hogs and chickens, riding horses, and sleeping with dogs at their feet. Renee traded her horse for a car at the age of 16, and she was off like a shot, graduating from Air Academy High School two years later.
She married in 1984, and though the union ended in divorce, it included, in her words, “The best thing she ever did,” which was giving birth to Ashleigh Christine, January 1985. Over the next 14 years, Renee lovingly nurtured Ashleigh as a single mother, doing her best with what she knew and what she had; she knew more, and she had more, because of the loving care she graciously welcomed from her family.
In 1999 she married the love of her life, Steve Bye, and with joy became a second mother to his then 6-year-old son, Jack. They had the privilege of celebrating two decades of marriage, but their relationship reached back to childhood, and that shared experience over a lifetime gave a deep richness to the “Steve and Renee” that we all knew, and we all loved.
Remembering the best of her: Renee was kind. She was creative. She was generous. She enjoyed the sunshine. She enjoyed her flower gardens. She was “our little hippie girl.” She was the silliest of grandmas. She loved her dogs. She loved her family. She was a believer. She was loved.
Renee Bye passed away unexpectedly on November 6, 2019. She is survived by her husband, her parents, her siblings, her children, son-in-law Tyler Wilson, grandchildren Pearl Annelee and Rose Emerie, her many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and her ever-faithful dog Lexi (the namesake of Alexander, the first “best dog”). We will remember and talk about her, we will continue to love what she was to all of us, we will miss her, and we will see her again at the gathering.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the Return to Nature Chapel West / Cowboys for Jesus Church, 11 North 22nd Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80904.
