In Loving Memory of Deborah Bonifas

Deborah Janet Kirwan Bonifas passed away April 16, 2018, at the age of 56, as the result of pancreatic cancer. Deborah was born in Clovis, New Mexico, to Jean (Nunneley) Kirwan and William B. Kirwan. She graduated from Roy J. Wasson High School in 1979, and attended CU and UCCS. Deborah was preceded in death by her mother, and her brother, Tim Kirwan. She is survived by her husband, Tom Bonifas and her son, Kirwan Bonifas, her father, her brother Sean (Lisa) Kirwan, her half sister, Kristi Kirwan, a niece, nephews and two great nephews.

Deborah enjoyed cooking, baking, and was known to family and friends for Colorado peach season, where she preserved jams, chutneys and salsas. She enjoyed wine and planning meals around a bottle.

She found her calling with The Pikes Peak Library District, working there for 33 years, doing what she loved. Deborah’s passions in life included her family and friends, public land preservation, especially in regards to Strawberry Fields, and a lifelong advocacy for women’s rights. She facilitated two book groups for a number of years. She loved to travel here and abroad.

A Memorial Service was held at 2:00pm Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 730 N. Tejon Street, Colorado Springs, 80903.

In lieu of flowers, Deborah has requested that donations be made, in her name, to any of the following organizations: Strawberry Fields (www.savecheyenne.org); Planned Parenthood (www.plannedparenthood.org – select Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains); or Westside Cares of Colorado Springs (www.westsidecares.org).
