In Loving Memory of Danny Shelley

Danny Alvin Shelley, age 68, passed away peacefully Monday, March 18, 2019 in his sleep at the home of this youngest son Brandon surrounded by family. He was born to Claude Eugene and Jennie Sue (Elliot) Shelley on July 21, 1950 in Rome, Georgia. Dan grew up in the Kingston Highway area in Rome, Georgia and went to Johnson Elementary School then graduating from Model High School. Dan was a successful entrepreneur and enjoyed working with people. His many businesses included a skating rink, a tour company in Colorado, one hour photo lab, and a comic book store. He was a member of the local Rotary Club in Canon City, Colorado and a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church on Kingston, Highway in Rome, Georgia. Dan enjoyed all sports and even tried out for the Atlanta Braves Baseball Farm team.

Dan loved to fish with his son, Clint, at the Roaring Judy Fishing Ponds near Almont, CO. On one winter fishing excursion, he tripped trying to catch his fishing pole as a fish was attempting to escape. He fell into the icy pond and the fish made off with his pole! He then had to walk a mile across snow covered ground in wet clothes and drove home basically naked. The following spring, he hooked another fishing line while pulling his in to the shore. He took hold of that line and began pulling it in too eventually discovering the pole he had lost months ago. He then began reeling that line in and discovered he had to fight a fish on the other end eventually catching the fish that had stolen his pole and sent him for a dunk. It was the most satisfying catch of his life.

Dan had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed being part of practical jokes with his friends and family. One day he showed up for a tennis match wearing his pink headband, wristbands and a pink shirt! Often, when taking a serve, he would quickly sit on his tennis racket causing laughter from onlookers and confusing the opposing team because they had no idea what to do.

Dan always had a joke for every occasion and kept people laughing. There was never a dull moment around him and he will be truly missed by anyone who ever knew him.

Dan was a widower at the time of his passing. He met his first wife Ladonna Morris Shelley of Lindale Georgia on a blind date in Rome Georgia.  They were married January 30, 1974. He met his second wife Susan Kato Shelley of Cedartown Georgia at the Holiday Inn Skytop Lounge in Rome, Georgia.  They were married on December 22, 2007 until her passing in July of 2018.

Dan is survived by a sister, Glenda Morris of Rome, Georgia; brother, Ricky Shelley, of Clearwater, Florida; son, Clinton Daniel Shelley of Grand Junction, Colorado; daughter, Heather Adrienne Shelley of Rome, Georgia; and son Major Brandon Claude Shelley of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
