Alexander Lee Skovgaard
April 17, 1962 – November 26, 2022
Alexander Lee Skovgaard, age 60, peacefully passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2022, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, while surrounded by family and love. Alex touched the lives of so many people. He never met a stranger during all his travels and professional capacities. The family and friends Alex so deeply cherished, grieve his absence, and celebrate his life. He truly has left the world a better place.
Alex was born to Sharon Lee and Donna Rae Skovgaard in Mason City, Iowa on Tuesday, April 17, 1962. As a boy he grew up in Colorado Springs, even beginning his journey into the newspaper business at the age of 9 with his first paper route. That boy would have never dreamed how far he would travel on that path. His route was adjacent to a childhood friend who turned into a lifelong friend David Schubert
He attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts. Alex became lifelong friends with his roommate Ron Hansen. His time there led Alex into a position with the Omaha World-Herald. Each advancement in his career was a step forward and upwards. Alex championed many victories throughout his life and much success in both his professional and personal life, successes literally stretching across the country. He cultivated several close friendships over the years with co-workers such as Kevin O’Neil and many more. Alex crossed paths with Byran Turner later in life while working on various projects; they developed a close bond and supported each other through difficult times.
Alex was an active member of his community and was involved with his church, Chamber of Commerce and was the Director of World-Herald Goodfellows Charities. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved being outdoors or in the garage working on anything with a motor. Thirty-seven years of his life Alex spent married to Deanne Skovgaard. He looked at the world with a very unique perspective. He enjoyed spending time in nature, camping, boating, and traveling. Alex always gravitated back to nature.
Alex concluded his media career as the Vice President of The BH Media Group. The BH Media Group operates sixty-eight newspapers and other media titles, located in California, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Millions of people trusted the information provided by the media sources Alex directly was responsible for overseeing. He received respect from everyone within his industry and will be forever missed by anyone who ever knew him.
Alex is preceded by his father Sharon Lee Skovgaard, who passed in 1989.
He is survived by his mother Donna Rae Skovgaard; his three children, daughter Kierstin Thompson and her husband Matthew, his son Sheldon Skovgaard and his wife Joanna and daughter Abbie Ashcraft and her husband Gary; nine grandchildren, Ethan Skovgaard, Garrett Ashcraft, Dane Skovgaard, Grant Ashcraft, Lillian Skovgaard, Alexis Thompson, Owen Skovgaard, Liam Thompson, Annabelle Skovgaard; two sisters, Jeanne Henrich and Kathleen Johnson; former spouse Deanne Skovgaard, The Dude his dog, Puma his cat, numerous co-workers around the country and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Graveside Services will be held Monday, December 5, 2022 at 2:00pm, at the Bear Cañon Cemetery, located at 397 North Perry Park Road, Sedalia, Colorado 80135 with Kevin Diffee officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Sheldon Skovgaard, Gary Ashcraft, Matthew Thompson, David Schubert, Ron Hansen, and Bryan Turner. Honorary Pallbearers include Kevin O’Neil, Ethan Skovgaard, Garrett Ashcraft, Dane Skovgaard, Grant Ashcraft, Owen Skovgaard, and Liam Thompson.
A reception will follow the graveside services at Journey’s End, located at 11 Primrose St. Palmer Lake, Colorado 80133 from 4:30pm – 6:00pm.
